- The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a computer adaptive test intended to assess analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills in written English for use in admission to a graduate management program, such as an MBA program or a DBA program at universities across the United States and Canada, and also at some of the top business schools in other countries across Europe, Asia, and Oceania. The scores are valid for 5 years. for assured design
GMAT is an online exam and is computer adaptive. The exam is a multiple-choice format that tests a candidate’s Verbal (English) and Quantitative (Math) skills. Besides the multiple choice section which comprises the main score of a maximum of 800, the test also has an Analytical Writing Section (AWA) which comprises an Essay and an Integrated Reasoning section.

GMAT test-takers can expect to receive a score that ranges from a minimum of 200 to a maximum of 800, which is a perfect score. Admissions experts urge MBA hopefuls to set their target GMAT score based on the average score accepted by their programs of interest.
Scores of 650 and above would ordinarily qualify someone for consideration at the top 20 business grad programs as it’s in the 75th percentile, but any score in the 600s might suffice for a top 50 program. The average GMAT score among people who took the exam from 2017 through 2019 was 564.84, according to the Graduate Management Admission Council, the organization that designs and administers the GMAT. However, more selective programs typically want higher scores in the 700s or the top 10% of test-takers.
GMAT is not just a typical English and Math proficiency or competency test. It is more than that and involves testing a candidate’s analytical skills. Hence the test is considered challenging if not hard. GMAT requires structured training and lots of proper test preparation, and shouldn’t be rushed.
