GRE Course Overview
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test is a standardized test created and administered by the Educational Testing Service, commonly known as ETS, that is designed to measure overall academic readiness for graduate school. Students interested in pursuing a master’s degree or a doctorate at universities across the United States and Canada, and in Europe, Asia, and Australia are required to take GRE also.
The GRE scores are valid for 5 years.
GRE is an online exam and is adaptive by section. The exam is a multiple-choice format that tests a candidate’s Verbal (English) and Quantitative (Math) skills.

The GRE General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills that have been developed over a long period of time and are required for success in today’s demanding programs.

GRE test-takers can expect to receive a score that ranges from a minimum of 260 to a maximum of 340, which is a perfect score. A score of 310 is considered a decent score, whereas a score of 315 is good. Some of the top universities require a score of 320 or above. However, GRE is only one aspect of the admission criteria, and students with scores of around 300 can get admitted to any quality university if they have a decent undergraduate GPA and other accomplishments.
Scores of 650 and above would ordinarily qualify someone for consideration at the top 20 business grad programs as it’s in the 75th percentile, but any score in the 600s might suffice for a top 50 program. The average GMAT score among people who took the exam from 2017 through 2019 was 564.84, according to the Graduate Management Admission Council, the organization that designs and administers the GMAT. However, more selective programs typically want higher scores in the 700s or the top 10% of test-takers.
GRE is not just a typical English and Math proficiency or competency test. It is a test that involves checking a candidate’s analytical skills. Hence the test is considered challenging if not hard. GRE requires structured training and lots of proper test preparation, and shouldn’t be rushed. In GRE, arcane vocabulary is tested in the verbal section.
